What cookies are

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. They let the site remember your preferences, keep you signed in, or help the people running the site understand what is being read and what is not.

We also use similar technologies such as local storage, which works in much the same way but is not sent to the server on every request.

What we use

This site uses only the categories of cookies described below. We do not use advertising or behavioural targeting cookies.

Essential cookies. Necessary for the site to function — for example, maintaining your session if you sign in to the admin area. These cannot be turned off without breaking the service.
Preferences and state. We may store small pieces of local state — such as whether you have dismissed a notice or which chapter you last read in the CURRENT Companion — so the site feels continuous when you return.
Analytics cookies. If we connect an analytics provider, cookies may be used to recognise returning visitors and to record which pages are read. No analytics provider is active by default.

Managing cookies

You can refuse, delete or block cookies through your browser settings. The exact steps depend on the browser you use — usually they sit under Settings → Privacy or Security.

Blocking all cookies will not stop the site from working, but some conveniences — such as remembering where you left off in the Companion — may be lost.
