Stay

The first movement of Stay · Sense · Shape, and the one most often mistaken for doing nothing.

In short

Stay is the discipline of resisting premature reaction sufficiently to remain present to what is actually happening. It is not passivity, delay or indecision: it is the deliberate holding of a situation long enough that the situation becomes clearer than the impulse to act on it.

What Stay is

A leader under pressure is offered an immediate and usually plausible interpretation of events. Stay is the refusal to accept that first interpretation as the situation itself. It buys the small amount of time in which the difference between the presenting problem and the actual one can appear — often the only interval in which that difference is still visible at all.

What Stay is not

It is not delay, and it is not a licence to defer decisions that are already ripe. A leader who calls their avoidance Stay has simply found a more dignified word for it. The test is direction: Stay is oriented towards seeing more clearly, and it ends the moment clarity arrives, whether that takes four seconds in a meeting or four weeks in a restructuring.

What makes it difficult

Organisations reward visible action, and the physiology of pressure argues for speed. The cost of staying is felt immediately and personally — as discomfort, as the appearance of hesitance — while the cost of reacting too early is paid later and usually by someone else. That asymmetry, not ignorance, is why the discipline is rare.

How it is practised

Ask what would have to be true for the current explanation to be wrong. Name the emotion in the room before naming the decision. Separate the deadline that is real from the urgency that is atmospheric. Hold a disagreement open one round longer than is comfortable. None of these are techniques; they are ways of not closing prematurely.

Lineage

Stay sits close to Ronald Heifetz's counsel to get off the dance floor and onto the balcony, and to Amy Edmondson's account of the conditions under which a group can remain with an uncomfortable fact. CURRENT's contribution is to treat it as a movement a leader makes, repeatedly, rather than a stance they adopt.

Questions

What does Stay mean in CURRENT?

Stay is the discipline of resisting premature reaction sufficiently to remain present to what is actually happening. It is the first movement of Stay · Sense · Shape, and it is deliberate rather than passive: the situation is held long enough to become clearer than the impulse to act on it.

Is Stay the same as waiting?

No. Waiting is indifferent to what happens in the interval; Stay is entirely about what becomes visible in it. Stay ends as soon as the situation is clear enough to move on, which may be seconds. Deferring a decision that is already clear is avoidance, not Stay.
