Journey: Confluence
The Confluence
Where your experience meets what the role actually needs
You have looked at yourself.
You have looked at the situation.
Now look at what happens where the two currents meet.
Not to prove that you fit.
To see where there is real evidence of fit — and where there is still uncertainty.

01 · Compare
What they seem to need
Do not begin with the job description. Begin with what you think the organisation is actually trying to change.
Business problem · expected outcomes · stakeholder context · mandate · likely tensions · the first 6–12 months · what is still unclear
If this appointment works well, what will be different because this person is there?
02 · Compare
What you can actually evidence
Experience matters most when it is relevant to the problem in front of you.
Similar situations · comparable scale · comparable complexity · relevant decisions · stakeholder experience · evidence of impact · situations where judgement mattered
Do not ask: Have I done this exact job before?
Ask: What evidence do I have that I can handle this kind of problem?
03 · Question
What you still need to understand
- What information is still missing?
- Which assumptions are you making?
- What do you need to test in conversation?
- What looks like a gap but may simply be unknown?
- What looks familiar because you have seen something similar before?
A question worth sitting with
Are you seeing real similarity — or only familiarity?
Unknown is not the same as missing.
04 · The working surface
Short notes only. Nothing here is stored.
05 · Clarify
Notice the gaps
- Real gap
- Something the role appears to require and you have not done.
- Learnable gap
- Something adjacent to existing experience that can realistically be developed.
- Unclear
- Something not yet understood well enough to judge.
- Assumed gap
- Something you may be concluding too early.
Some gaps matter. Some are learnable. Some are only assumptions.
06 · Clarify
What would you need to ask?
- What decision rights does the role actually have?
- What has made this difficult until now?
- What would the first six months need to achieve?
- Who will matter most to success?
- What is expected but not written in the role description?
Good questions are not signs that you know less. They are often signs that you are looking more carefully.

Optional · AI prompts
Use AI to challenge the connection, not manufacture it.
Where does my evidence genuinely connect?
“Compare my CV with this role. Identify only the areas where there is clear evidence of relevance. Separate evidence from assumption.”
What is still unclear?
“Identify the five most important things I would need to understand about this role before judging fit.”
Where am I stretching?
“Highlight where I may be trying too hard to make my experience fit the role.”
You do not need to prove that the fit is perfect.
You need enough clarity to know what deserves testing in conversation.
The Confluence is where you think through the connection. The Match Workspace helps you examine the evidence behind it.
A natural place to pause
If the next conversation is not close yet, this is a good place to stop. Come back when the conversation gets closer.
